Hey there, Capt. Vinnie here with the YB Normal. For this week I have a great report for you, the theme continues as of last weeks report with excellent fishing. This week we had some great weather to go along with our deep sea fishing. To start it off the trolling bite has began to be very productive for species like kingfish. They have begun to show up in larger numbers just off the coast in shallow depths from 80-140 feet. Majority of the fish have been smaller sized but thats to be expected with the first wave of fish, they should continue to get larger as we get closer to summer. Staying on the reef the sailfish seem to have taken a break, although it is getting to the end of there season some fish will stay around for a while and some will leave, kite fishing wont be as common of a way to target the sailfish it will mostly transition to trolling baits. Moving a little bit deeper the blackfin tuna bite has been very steady recently when the water is blue to purple color. Some days the water is green and those days tuna are hard to come by. When we have blue water usually that means north current which would be a spin off of gulfstream water and those days we seem to have the best results fishing for tuna. Most of the tuna have been around 10lbs average but fishing live baits has been the best way to catch larger tuna close to 30lbs. Last but not least for offshore species the mahi mahi have been plentiful but the sizes have been mixed. A lot of fish on the smaller size but there are some keeper size as well. This is great news because last year they didn’t show till later summer early fall and now we are getting them in early summer, who knows it could be a great year for them. One thing i can say with the mahi right now and this happened to us on a recent charter is make sure to have some rods rigged to cast to the mahi incase they swim up to the boat, last week on a charter we were bottom fishing around 400 feet and a turtle came up and it was full of mahi, luckly we have rods rigged at all times but if we didn’t we might of missed that chance. We ended up catching 15 mahi but only 8 keeper size but if we weren’t prepared thats 8 less fish we could of caught. Hopefully that fishery gets better and better as summer approaches.
