ABOUT KINGFISH FISHING IN FT. LAUDERDALE
Catching kingfish in Fort Lauderdale is one of the specialties at YB Normal Sportfishing. These powerful, fast-swimming game fish are found in the waters off Fort Lauderdale all year
long, making them a reliable and exciting target on nearly every charter.
Known for their blistering runs and aggressive strikes, kingfish are often compared to the speed of wahoo and are a favorite among anglers of all experience levels.
On most days, kingfish are one of the most common catches on our trips—we land them on roughly 90% of our charters. Sizes can vary from smaller 5-pound fish to massive “smoker kings” weighing 50 pounds or more. When a smoker king hits, it can rip line off the reel so fast it looks like the line is smoking, delivering one of the most thrilling moments in offshore fishing.
Like many game fish found off Fort Lauderdale, kingfish can be caught using several different techniques. At YB Normal Sportfishing, our preferred methods are slow trolling with live bait
and kite fishing, which are extremely effective for targeting larger fish.
Kingfish can also be caught using traditional trolling methods or by anchoring over wrecks and reefs, where they often gather to feed. These fish typically roam waters ranging from 50 to 300 feet deep, especially along reef edges where baitfish are abundant.
Because kingfish often hunt in areas with lots of bait activity, it’s
common for anglers to encounter other exciting species during the same trip. While targeting kingfish, you may also hook into sailfish, tuna, mahi-mahi (dolphin), or bonita, adding even
more action to the day.
Kingfish are known for their speed, strength, and hard fights, making them a fantastic catch for beginners and experienced anglers alike.
Whether you’re chasing your first offshore fish or
looking to battle a trophy smoker king, a Fort Lauderdale kingfish charter with YB Normal Sportfishing offers nonstop excitement on the water!
