Golden Tile Fishing
ABOUT GOLDEN TILE FISHING
Catching golden tilefish in Fort Lauderdale is one of the most unique and rewarding offshore fishing experiences available with YB Normal Sportfishing.
These deep-water fish are known
for their impressive size, colorful appearance, and incredible flavor.
Often called “poor man’s lobster,” golden tilefish are prized by anglers for both the fight and the outstanding table fare
they provide.
Golden tilefish live in very deep water—typically deeper than 700 feet—where they build burrows in the soft, muddy bottom along underwater ridges. Despite living in these depths, Fort
Lauderdale anglers are fortunate because the continental shelf drops off quickly.
This means we can reach prime golden tilefish grounds just over 3.5 miles offshore, making it possible to target them even on a half-day fishing charter. These fish are aggressive scavengers and will strike a wide variety of baits that pass near
their burrows. Popular bait choices include squid and cut fish, which are very effective when presented near the bottom where tilefish live and feed. Because of the extreme depths involved, the most effective method for targeting golden tilefish
is using electric reels or power-assisted reels. These specialized reels make it easier to drop baits to the seafloor and retrieve them from depths exceeding 700 feet.
Strong currents from the Gulf Stream can make bottom fishing challenging, and in some cases it may take up to 8 pounds of lead just to keep the bait on the bottom.
Finding golden tilefish requires knowledge of the seafloor and advanced electronics. The experienced crew aboard the YB Normal uses modern fish-finding technology and years of
local knowledge to locate productive areas. Golden tilefish often gather along muddy ridges on the seafloor, which can stretch hundreds of feet in length. Once positioned over a productive ridge, anglers drop multi-hook rigs to the bottom, often
equipped with an underwater light to attract fish. Since sunlight cannot reach these depths, any movement or light near the bottom can help draw tilefish toward the bait. The key is to keep
the bait on the bottom as long as possible, where these fish spend most of their time feeding.
Golden tilefish are strong fighters that provide an exciting battle from deep water, and their vibrant gold, blue, and yellow coloring makes them one of the most beautiful fish pulled from the
Atlantic depths. With their delicious meat and impressive size, they are a fantastic target foranglers looking for a truly memorable fishing experience.
